Product: Maui Moisture Vanilla Bean Hair Butter

Its Claims:
– To soften, smooth, and repair frizzy, unruly hair
– Moisturize strands
– Mend split ends
– Leave hair with a health glow

How to use:
– Deep Conditioning – Apply in shower after shampooing. Evenly distribute from roots to tips. Allow to sit on hair for 5 minutes, allowing the steam from the shower to help the conditioner to penetrate the strands. Rinse.
– Leave In – Apply to damp hair and evenly distribute. Style as usual

Pros:
– Maui Moisture is free of silicones, parabens, gluten, SLS, sulfated surfactant, and synthetic dyes which is awesome on the heels of everyone cancelling Eco-Styler gel and really wanting to use products that don’t have such harmful ingredients
– It’s vegan and Eco-friendly
– Uses pure coconut water, and aloe juice, both of which are known for hydration (source and source)
– Has a beautiful nutty, vanilla scent that lasts, but isn’t overpowering
– Can be found locally at convenient stores like Target, Ulta, and Walgreen
– Thick consistency coats the hair well and really locks in the moisture
– Affordable

Cons:
– The thick consistency could be a bit too heavy for those with fine hair. Also, those with very thick, dense hair may find that they only get 1-2 uses out of it depending on how heavy handed they are with the product.
– Doesn’t work as well when used as directed (5 minutes in a steamy shower)
– Has a lingering scent. While I love the scent and don’t find it overpowering, if you don’t like the scent, you may be stuck with it for a day or 2

My experience:

So… I was being my usual curious self, strolling through the hair care aisles when I stumbled upon the Maui Moisture Hair Butter. I wasn’t completely unfamiliar with the Maui Moisture brand, as I had already tried (and really liked) the Maui Moisture Agave Nectar conditioner, but this was my first time seeing this hair butter. So I decided to play it safe and go with the Vanilla Bean scent, and the mask geared toward smoothing and repairing.

Now, typically I like to amp up my deep conditioners. However, in order to get the real feel for the product, I used it as is. The fist time I used it, I applied it very heavy handedly to freshly washed hair, and allowed it to sit over night. When I rinsed in the morning, I was unimpressed. It was aight, it did what it was supposed to do (I guess), but nothing to write home about. The second time I used it, I applied it to freshly co-washed hair (since my hair had been shampooed recently and was virtually product-free) and allowed it to sit for the duration of my steamy shower which was 10-15 minutes before rinsing. Again, it was aight, but I wasn’t sure that I was going to repurchase.

The third time that I used it, it was essentially to use the rest of the product so that I could get rid of one of the many jars that I have. This time around I used it after a clay wash and applied heat using my hooded blow dryer attachment for 30 minutes and rinsed. OH BUDDY, Was that a game changer! My hair was so soft… so moisturized… it was just what my fine, porous and parched AF strands needed.

At this point, I was kind of ticked that I hadn’t started with the application of heat because after 3 deep conditioning sessions with heat, I COULD HAVE HAD A HEAD FULL OF LITERAL BUTTER! I then proceeded to use the LOC method using the As I am leave-in and my ayurvedic whipped shea butter mix, and install 6 of the laziest flat-twists in life. Even with my lazy flat-twists install, and taking them down before they were fully dry, I still got a soft and moisturized fro with sheen and bounce for days!

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until all of my product was gone that this could be used as a leave-in as well. I was disappointed, but this stuff is so bangin’, I went and bought 2 more jars of the other lines/scents to try out as deep conditioners and leave-ins. I’ll be sure to report back!
