Lately there has been a big push for everyone to support Black-owned businesses, seeing as to how they are often overlooked and not given their just due. It is also often discussed how the “Black dollar” only circulates within the Black community zero to one time, compared to the Asian community of 9 times, (source) which is basically not circulating at all. The black community is now (probably more than ever) being more conscious about how we leverage our buying power.
While I don’t buy things solely because of the owners/employees ethnicity, I do think that it is important to always look for good products and businesses lend support to the underdog. I often support local businesses, small businesses, family-owned businesses and women-owned businesses. I had also been supporting black-owned businesses mostly because of the hair care products that I purchase, but when it came time to buy something other than hair milks and curling custards I couldn’t name a black-owned businesses.
That is when I came up with the idea for this thread. I wanted to create a post that could be used a resource to myself and others that are hoping to support black-owned and black-supportive businesses in all markets.
While black ownership is definitely something to be highlighted, praised, and supported, I also think that it is important that businesses that are not necessarily black-owned, but are black-supportive are supported as well. For me, it is just as important that companies owned by other ethnic groups, but provide Black people with employment and representation (and not just pandering and using… that line is very thin) are supported as well. For me, economic opportunities are just as important, as everyone does not want to be a business owner and a seat at the proverbial table is just as crucial. A Love for Me has a video that talks about this (and mentions a few notable brands) and has a Buy Black Series that definitely worth a watch!
